Sclerotherapy Treatment for small and large veins in Preston

Sclerotherapy and foam sclerotherapy treatments are modern alternatives to surgery that treat the vein through a series of injections rather than incisions, providing almost instant recovery time from procedures for patients of the North West Clinic in Preston. Our consultants run clinics in Blackpool and Preston and also treat patients from Southport, the Lake District, Wigan and Manchester and throughout the Northwest.

What is sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy, or injection of varicose veins, is a procedure designed to improve the appearance of your smaller varicose veins. The veins are injected with a solution called a sclerosant which damages the internal lining of the vein and causes blood clotting within the vein. In time, your own body will then naturally destroy the vein and it will disappear. The solution normally used for this procedure is sodium tetradecyl sulphate (STD), and is available in different concentrations depending on the size of the vein being treated, so you can be sure to get the best result for you.

What is foam sclerotherapy?

Normally, STD concentrate is injected as a solution directly into the vein to be treated. Foam sclerotherapy involves making small volumes of the solution into foam by rapid mixing and agitation with a small volume of air. This can then be used to treat some of the larger underlying abnormal veins which would not normally be treated with conventional sclerotherapy. The procedure is performed under ultrasound control. The foam solution causes intense spasm of the vein, which encourages the vein to close.

Why choose sclerosant treatment at the North West Vein Clinic?

There are many benefits to choosing a sclerosant treatment for venous disease:
  • The procedure is carried out using a number of injections rather than incisions, therefore little or no anaesthetic is required.
  • Sclerotherapy can be used to treat very small veins that other treatments cannot.
  • Foam Sclerotherapy is very versatile, it is able to track up and treat very knotted veins where other treatments may have difficulty.
  • Sclerotherapy treatments have a much quicker recovery time and less side effects than conventional surgery.
  • The procedure is very quick, taking about 30 minutes to complete, and you are able to return to your normal activities the same day.
Following your sclerotherapy treatment, the legs are  bandaged to ensure that the foam works effectively. The experienced consultants at North West Clinic will be able to provide a full aftercare programme.
